EduNet 2013: Introducing E-Education in rural Kenya

EduNet 2013: A project that aims to provide a solution to limited textbook availability in rural Kenyan schools using existing GSM mobile networks via an affordable tablet (EduTab).

In many developing countries, access to public libraries and educational resources like text books are lacking, especially for students in rural areas and even when available, are very expensive. The mobile cellular networks and internet connectivity in developing countries like Kenya are quite advanced and are spreading vastly. This gives rise to a way for utilising this as an educational tool. EduNet 2013 is a project motivated to providing a solution to the lack of educational resources specifically text books in rural Kenya. We plan to provide affordable access to educational resources in the form of a mobile computer tablet (EduTab). This tablet will contain a web-based application which will include study material such as textbooks while also giving the students a medium through which they can set up a dialogue with their fellow peers and teachers. The teachers will be able to post their own notes on and other material on the application when need be, thus demolishing the existing communication barriers Kenyan students and teachers face at present, when not in school. But most importantly, it will give students access to text books to learn from. The report highlights the feasibility study performed on trying to manufacture a low cost tablet and a sustainable business model that would work in a rural area in Kenya. It focuses primarily on research and has technical design aspects as well with which try to create a solution bearing our research in mind.
