As the name suggests, SCI is an injury to the spinal cord. However, SCI is caused by trauma (motor vehicle accidents, falling accidents…) as opposed to disease.
SCI is divided into several classes depending on the extent of the injury.
More information can be found at: Ninds.gov- What is Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES)?
FES refers to the use of electrical signals to help restore mobility in limbs that have been affected by trauma or illnesses such as SCI, cerebral palsy (CP) etc. Application of electric signal can be either transcutaneous (on the skin) or percutaneous (underneath the skin). More in-depth information can be found at.
More information can be found at: Ifees.org- I hear the terms FNS (Functional Neuromuscular Stimulation), FES, and Electrical Stimulation (ES). What is the difference?
FNS is a subset of FES. Technically, the term FES is used when electric currents are applied at specific points in the body to restore or improve function of a limb. The term FNS is used when FES is used to move parts of the body.
ES is a general term used to refer to any form of technology that uses electric signals. The term ‘functional’ is added to represent the restoration of useful movements such as stepping, standing, grasping etc. by use of ES.
More information can be found at: Virginia FNS- Who can benefit from FES?
FES is a rapidly growing field with its use being explored in many fields: multiple sclerosis (MS), Cerebral Palsy (CP), stroke (Cerebrovascular Accident), SCI, Dropped Foot and many more.
- Where can I get a FES device?
